    Exclamation 106 1.5 Diesel Timing ???

Hi im abit new on here and seeking some help if anyone knows ?

ive got a 1995 106 1.5D mardi gras which ive just changed the head gasket on, ive had a suspicion all along that the timing was out and im about to sort out out, but there are a few things concerning me.

    1. which side is no: 1 cylinder at, because the sheets off auto data say no: 1 is at the cam belt side, and the haynes manual say that its at the gearbox side ??

    and

    2. Am i right in thinking that aslong as the no:1 cylinder is at tdc, and the cam and diesel injector pump are locked off, that when i go to put the cam belt back on, thats job done ??

Thanks guys, i really need help A.S.A.P. as im lost without my car

There is a locking point for the crank. Standing at the front of the engine bay (by radiator). Go underneath. Go up a bit until the side of the block goes vertical. Go accross right and theres a hole to drop a thin piece of round metal into to lock the crank in place where it should be.

    Sorry to hi-jack here but

i lock my engine into TDC all sems good, i then take the head and set the timing mark on the cam to 12 o'clock, tension the belt and when i crank the engine over by hand it feels as though the valves are hitting the pistons?

    where am i going wrong?

You also have to lock up the camshaft and injector pump. Ignore the timing marks, no idea why they're there.

I assume you have a diesel seeing you're posting in this thread, but I think the process is just the same for a petrol, just it won't have the injector pump.

Edit: Gold star for you for turning it over by hand first.

    Hi,

    thanks for posting that-very helpful.

Have you got the autodata diesel injection manual that the pages mention to time the injection pump?

or do you know how to do the fine timing on these with a bosch fuel pump?

    thanks

No, I never had to fine-tune the pump as it was working fine when I took the old belt off. I've got a lucas pump anyway.

Whats up with it? Why do you think it needs fine tuning?

    Hi,

I'm doing a lucas to bosch conversion and the bosch pump is brand new so it might need timing when it's on- waiting for a water pump to arrive and then I'll know.

    thanks

It should be fine if it came out of a working engine. Try it by just timing up the belt first and then worry about fine-tuning the pump if you're 100% sure it's the pump causing it to not fire up.

Edit: just read, brand new pump. Try it anyway by just timing up the belt first.
